A GREAT METALLIC PLAYGROUND

Located in Lormont, on the right bank of Bordeaux, the Genicart district is a housing estate built in the sixties. In addition to restoring the buildings, the project proposes to create green ways, sporting equipments, traffic lanes and socializing sites in order to totally transform this district making it a contemporary car-free area.

As a part of this renovation area, there is this playground developed by BASE. It is  intended as a compact and partially transparent object made with perforated metal panels at the centre of an area entirely dedicated to children’s games that gives a new purpose to an underused site.

One of two towers that rises from the main play surface has a trampoline in its base and a staircase leading to the top of the longer slide, which descends through the surface of the main deck. In the other tower, parents can follow a staircase to the top, which contains a platform where they can socialise and observe children playing.

A great work in an area with some usual problems in this kind of  buildings. Design team has paid special attention to the bottom of the buildings which suffer from a lack of shops or from inadequate configurations : uninhabitated housings, unusable piles, deserted associative premises and sensitive running-through hallways.

Great work!
